$1250/month for Students! What you need to know about the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund

“COVID-19 has meant that there aren’t as many jobs out there for students, and without a job, it can be hard to pay for tuition or the day-to-day basics. You might normally have turned to your parents for help, but right now mom and dad are stretched, too.”
- Prime Minister Trudeau

Since many students were ineligible for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has promised a new emergency benefit targeting students undergoing financial hardship as a result of COVID-19.

What is it?

Although information about this plan is still becoming available, we know that eligible students will receive a $1,250 monthly payment from May to August that can increase to $1,750 for people with disabilities or dependents.

Who’s Eligible?

College and university students who are in school, planning to start in September, or those who graduated in December 2019 will be eligible to collect from this emergency benefit program. Furthermore, working students that earn less than $1,000 per month can apply.

Additional Support

Trudeau’s $9B student aid plan includes a number of other ways students can receive financial assistance. The government will be creating an additional 76,000 jobs for young people in areas that need assistance and a new Student Service Grant will give students volunteering between $1000 and $5000.

Furthermore, the government will be doubling the amount paid from Canada Student Grants to part-time and full-time students along with students with disabilities and students with dependents.
