5 Tips to Avoid the Freshman 15

5 Tips to Avoid the Freshman 15

It’s a tale as old as time. You go to university, let your guard down a little and freedom takes control of you.

Then all of a sudden, it’s been four months since you’ve been to the gym and you’ve eaten tater tots every day.

You put your clothes on and are surprised to find that you don’t need a belt for your jeans anymore and your shirt is feeling more snug than usual.

While this can be a terrifying thought, don’t be afraid. Several studies have shown that it’s normal to put on some extra weight your first year of Uni.

While 15 pounds may not be accurate, research has shown that two-thirds of students will gain about 5-7 pounds in their first semester. Don’t worry though, with these 5 tips you can work on combatting that weight gain and remain healthy.

1. Make a Commitment to Yourself

Commit to a result or course of action. It’s important to find a mantra that works for you. There is no special pill or magical force that will get you to the gym or ensure you make healthy food choices. At the end of the day, motivation is something we all need to find in ourselves.

2. Set a Goal

The best part about health and fitness is that these are physical changes that you can see. Set a measurable, achievable goal for yourself and commit to a timeline for when you wish to complete it.

Once you have set your goal, tell a friend or family member. Studies have shown that by sharing your goals with others you are much more likely to achieve them.

3. Stay Active

Studies have suggested that while also burning calories, regular exercise can actually improve memory and thinking skills. Many people choose not to exercise because it isn’t fun for them.

However, they forget there are many other ways to work out rather than just lifting weights or spending hours on the treadmill. Make your workout fun by joining a recreational sports league, taking a class at the rec center or exploring classes online!

Some great Youtubers to check out are Fitness Blender (my personal favourite), Tone it Up, and POPsugar.

4. Diet is Key

The cafeteria can be friend or foe. However, most universities have done a great job of including healthier options for students or including the number of calories for each food item.

One good tip is to always remember to eat vegetables or fruit at least once a day and avoid foods with added sugars like pop. You can also try keeping healthy snacks in your room to kill those cravings.

By only giving yourself access to healthy foods, it makes it easier for you to make the healthy choice during those 1 AM study sessions.

Try making your own trail mix with nuts and dark chocolate chips to kill those sweet cravings. Or try SkinnyPop popcorn if you’re looking for something crunchy.

5. Reward Yourself for the Little Things

When it comes to health and your body, nothing will happen overnight. It’s important to remember that even though you’re not seeing immediate changes, they are happening.

They’re happening every time you choose to eat a piece of fruit instead of chocolate. They’re happening every time you choose to walk instead of Uber.

By allowing yourself to enjoy the small victories instead of punishing yourself when you slip up it makes it easier to continue keeping a healthy mindset and reach your goals.
