Dorm Room Essentials
Knowing what you’ll need in your dorm room can be tricky. Do you bring a lot of stuff or the bare minimum? What is allowed and what isn’t? What should every guy bring? It’s a lot to take in, so here is a short breakdown of what is essential for dorms.
The most important thing to remember when moving into dorms is that it’s your home for the next year. You want to make it as comfortable as possible. This means having a good set of comforters, pillows, and blankets. Your bed needs to be your new home base, especially if you’re sharing a room with a roommate.
Make your room comfortable and practical
Populating your room with things that make it feel like a home is essential. Dorm rooms can be bleak and boring, so bring things that make you happy. This could be a TV and game systems, or posters, or books. Things that take up and create your personal space.
Your dorm room needs to be just as functional as it is comfortable. So make sure you bring an alarm clock, that you know how to work, to make sure that you don’t miss classes.
Power bars and surge protectors, they may not look pretty but when you’re sharing plugs with a roommate or in a room that only has two wall plugs, they come in handy. And storage containers are a must. You will need them at some point, no matter what.
Laundry & Bathroom
You are now in charge of your own laundry. This means that you need a laundry basket, folding ones for easy storage are best, and detergent. If your laundry machines run on coins, perhaps even a coin purse.
Bathrooms in dorms are generally communal. This means that you can’t leave your shower stuff in the bathroom. Buy a shower caddy, towels, and maybe even shower shoes. You’ll also need a small bag for your toothbrush, comb, deodorant, and shaving equipment. The more organized you are, the less likely you are to lose something.
Kitchen
Dorms are very strict about what cooking appliances are allowed, so make sure you find out your school’s rules on appliances before bringing any. Coffeemakers are the number one thing to bring. Or, if you don’t like coffee, then get a plug in tea kettle.
Warm drinks can really help your mental health. Most dorms may come with a mini-fridge or microwave, either in the dorm room or in a nearby communal kitchen, but if they don’t then look into bringing one.
Something small that makes a world of difference in a dorm room is a bulletin board. They are a great way to keep up with what you have due, a way to give yourself reminders, or even communicate with a roommate. Having the visual reminder of what you have going on makes a world of difference.
