How to get an Internship with no Experience
Getting stuck in the endless loop of, “no experience for the job, but can’t get a job to get experience” is a college student’s worst nightmare. Oftentimes an internship can solve that loop.
But wait, don’t you need experience to get hired at an internship as well?
Resume Presentation

Your resume is the first thing a potential boss will see. This means that it needs to sing your praise and make you seem like the ideal person for the job, even if there’s no previous work experience.
The trick is to write a skill focused resume. Instead of focusing on your lack of experience, accentuate why you would be good for the job. What skills have you learned at college that make you right for the position?
You may not be able to say that you worked here or there, but you can say that you’ve gained the skills that make you as ready as if you had the experience.
Cover Letters

Cover letters are just as important as your resume. They are your potential boss’ first look at you and how you are as an individual. You want to make your cover letter interesting and tailored to each intern position.
Your cover letter should be concise and have examples of the way you’ve used the skills you’ve listed in your resume to excel in situations. Never let up on an opportunity to promote yourself to a potential boss.
Pound the Pavement

Get out there and apply to places. The more places you apply to the more chances someone will accept you. With no experience it is super important to not put all your eggs in one basket.
You need to make sure that you are covering as wise a field as possible. Even if you don’t think you have a chance, give it a shot. The worst thing someone can do is say no.
Network

Try to introduce yourself to as many people as possible. If you make a good impression on someone, they’re more likely to remember you and perhaps even hire you. Put yourself into situations where you have the chance to sell yourself to a potential boss.
Follow up and keep in contact with anyone you meet in your industry. Word of mouth is important and while they might not be able to give you an internship, they might know someone who can.
Be the First

Ask to intern at places that have never had an intern before. If they’ve never had an intern before they’re more likely to hire those without experience.
This means that you’ll get to set the tone for interns after you. Don’t be afraid to reach out and try.
