How to Improve Your Online Learning Experience
As more and more students and schools make the jump from offline classes to online classes, some students may be wondering how they can make the switch. If you’re having a difficult time moving online, check out some of these tips to improve your online learning experience!
1. Create a Routine
While you might be thinking to yourself, “oh, online learning will be a BREEZE. Sit in my pyjamas all day and I can take my lessons whenever I want? Easy. Amazing. Great.” This is the mentality of most students when they think about online learning.
However, it’s easy to lose your motivation when you have nothing to keep you accountable. One of the best ways to keep yourself motivated is by creating a routine. Without a routine, it’s easy to push off your obligations and procrastinate tasks you don’t want to do.
Pretend like you’re going to a physical class and create an online learning schedule similar to how you’d be going to your classes anyway. This can help keep you on track and ensure you’re making the most of your online experience!
2. Set Up a Nice Study Area
While your bed might seem incredibly tempting to sit in while you take your classes, it can hinder your ability to learn properly. Research has found that your brain associates sleep with your bed.
Thus, the simple act of getting into bed or staying in bed causes your brain to wind down and prepare to go to sleep. One of the best ways to improve your online learning experience is by creating a study area where you feel productive.
Having a good workspace helps improve productivity and individual organization. Find an area in your house with a good desk and comfy chair and start creating your workspace! Get candles and flowers or whatever sparks positivity in your day.
Get creative with it. Make it an area you’re excited to go to.
3. Keep Distractions in Another Room
Everyone has heard this tip before but keep your distractions in another room. Or if not another room, at least further than arm’s length away from you.
Whether it’s your phone, laptop or even a pet, try to keep non-essential distractions away from you. In doing so, you’ll be able to decrease procrastination and improve your productivity. While this is incredibly difficult, the best online students are the ones that are able to set aside time to focus.
If you’re struggling with distractions, try figuring out a method for you. Try listening to music to drown out outside noise or go to a coffee shop to get away from your dorm room. There are a lot of different options, you just need to find the one that suits you best!
4. Utilize Productivity Apps
We all have technology available at our fingertips, why not utilize it? As more people move to online learning, more people are coming out with apps to help deal with online distractions.
Unfortunately, not all of us have the willpower to turn off our phones for a few hours. Many student-based apps work towards putting locks on your social media or turning off your notifications on your phone.
Try apps such as SelfControl or Freedom if you’re having a hard time getting rid of your online distractions!
