How to Recover from a Bad Grade
Once a grade starts to slip it can seem impossible to recover. With so few assignments and other courses needing attention, it can be hard to keep your grades up.
But hope isn’t lost, bad grades happen all the time and not everyone who starts with a bad grade in a class ends with one. Here are a few tips and tricks to recover from a bad test grade.
Put in the Work

While hard to hear, there are very few easy solutions to bringing your bad grades up. A lot of the time it’s about setting goals for yourself and doing everything in your power to meet those goals.
So, know how much everything is worth in the class and work strategically. If you’ve failed 2 out of the 5 tests in the class, make sure that you are doing everything you can to be prepared for the other 3 tests.
If the final exam is worth 40% of your mark, make sure that you start studying weeks in advance.
Be ready to put in the work.
Get Help

Not doing well on assignments and tests because of lack of interest and lack of understanding are two very different things. If your bad grades are because you can’t get a handle on the material, then ask for help.
Find a tutor or ask the professor, but make sure that you find a way to cut off your struggling early on. The better you understand the course material the easier it will be to do the assignments and bring your grade up.
It’s not a weakness, everyone needs help sometimes.
Nail the Final Exam

The best way to bring up your grade is by doing well on the assignments that are worth the most. A lot of the time that means a final exam or a final project.
Weighted grades work in your favour, it won’t matter if you’ve failed all the smaller assignments if you can positively ace the final. Roughly speaking, if your final exam is worth 40% then you can bring your grade up by 10-15% should you get nearly 100% on the exam.
Being prepared for the final exam is the best thing you can do for your grades. If you are having trouble understanding the course material, consider trying an exam prep company like Wize. Find your course here.
Ask for Extra Credit

An easy way to boost your grade is to ask the professor if they’re willing to give out Extra Credit assignments. Many teachers will either have some already prepared or they will create some along the way.
The great thing about Extra Credit assignments is that they will generally be between 5-10% worth of your grade and will be small and easy enough to be completed quickly.
Any addition to your grade can help, but sometimes teachers will have more than one Extra Credit assignment and those are golden.
Take the time and get them done.
Bad grades aren’t set in stone, there is always something you can do to boost them. You’ve got this.
