Secret Tunnels Around Western to Get You Through the Winter

In the dead of winter, the last thing you want to do is go outside to the frigid cold. Thankfully, Western has a few secret tunnels many don’t know about that can help you make it safely (and warmly) to your next class or exam room.

1) UCC to Weldon

The most popular tunnel of all is the tunnel from the university community centre to the biggest library on campus. Right at the front of the library, the tunnel leads you straight to the basement of the UCC where the book store, pharmacy, and dental clinic are just steps away from the tunnel entrance.

This is the best way to ensure you can still get your coffee fixed and have a lunch break without having the bear the cold weather.

2) Middlesex College to Western Science Centre

Middlesex College holds a lot of secret resources for graduate students including SOGS and the coveted grad club. While they may look close on a map, the buildings are not as close as you think which is why this tunnel is a great alternative to ensuring you don’t trap outside.

3) Social Science Building to the UCC

While these two buildings stand tall beside each other, the secret tunnel underneath ensures that you don’t have to leave the comforts of warmth as you travel between the two. Social science is the biggest faculty and thus usually has the most classes going on.

They’ve recently taken out the Tim Hortons at social science so this tunnel is a great way to ensure that you can quickly run to the UCC and get a coffee between classes from one of the three Tim Hortons, the Starbucks, or the Spoke before running back to your next class.

4) Alumni Hall and Thames Hall

While there aren’t always classes or exams in these buildings, these buildings are well known for being the best place to catch a basketball or volleyball game on campus.

Although these two buildings are pretty close together, they also connect to a tunnel that leads to the Law building and the Spencer Engineering building which is a definite plus during those colder days. Especially because the Law building has a library of its own if you’re not up for the busyness of Weldon.

5) Arts and Humanities to IGAB (International and Graduate Affairs Building)

While this tunnel is pretty unknown, it is a great way to escape the harsh weather while being surrounded by amazing study spaces. Both the Arts and Humanities building and IGAB tend to be the quieter buildings on campus which leaves them the best places to be for some peace and quiet.
