Study Tips for Kinesthetic Learners

So you’re a Kinesthetic learner. You probably are good on your feet, have good reflexes, and great motor memory. You probably like sports or the arts and aren’t afraid to experiment.

But you also probably have trouble sitting still long enough to study or take in information, like many Kinesthetic learners.

But fear not, because here are a few study tips for Kinesthetic learners:

Move Around

If you have the space to move - move. Get up and walk while you study. Maybe even study as you exercise. The idea is that your brain connects movement to learning and by moving while studying you’ll take in the information.

Pacing is an easy way to keep yourself moving as you study, it keeps you up and going without being a distraction. Listening to audiobooks as you jog or work out is a great way to take in textbook material without ever having to pick up the textbook.

Fidget

If you aren’t able to move about then do the next best thing to pacing and fidget. Tap that pencil and bounce that leg. Move in some way that creates a connection between the material and your body movements.

Bouncing your leg might be the easiest way to move but drumming your fingers, bobbing your head to the music, or swinging your legs work just as well. Work with the situation you’re in and make it the best outcome you possibly can.

Turn Your Notes Into An Activity

Make your notes interactive! No really. Do whatever you can to make it so you can actively interact with your study material. Actively take notes as you study in your textbook. Highlight or underline in pencil everything you need to remember. Connect motor memories to your notes. The more you make studying an active thing, the easier it’s going to be to remember the information.

If you’re lucky then your motor memory may pick up exact phrasing on certain phrases and it will absolutely help with spelling and grammar, so make sure to write out as much of your notes as possible by hand. Highlight buzzwords and then maybe even write them out with their definitions.

Act It Out

If it can be performed, perform it. The great thing about being a Kinesthetic learner is that the more you move, the more you absorb. So recreating a battle from a history class, or creating math equations out of writing supplies can be the best way to truly understand what you’re studying.

Talking to yourself is a great tactic, especially reciting the notes like they’re some sonnet. Do whatever it takes to make your notes more than just words on a page. If you’re studying physics put the theory, as long as it can safely be done, into practice.

The golden rule for Kinesthetic learners is to learn by doing. Do get out there and try all these tips.

Note-taking is also a great way for kinesthetic learners to remember information. Check out our video on how to take notes effectively online!
