My name is Dr. Danielle Spice, and I’m excited to meet you! Before we start, here’s a little bit about me: I played varsity rugby for Western University and as a junior national player. Now, when I’m not working as a Scientist for a biotech company in cell & gene therapy, I like to play rugby and spend time with my Golden Retrievers, Reggie & Finn!
My Education and Credentials
I have a PhD in Biology with a special focus on Developmental, Cell and Molecular Biology from Western University. My PhD research focused on exploring the protein interactions involved in going from a stem cell into a neural cell (the cells found in your brain and central nervous system). Now as a Scientist at a cell & gene therapy company I use CRISPR gene editing to genetically engineer cells for both research and clinic.
How I Can Help You Succeed
I am passionate about biology. I love talking about science, and making science easy to understand, because it's just so cool! Teaching is my favourite way to get other people just as excited about science as I am. I have extensive knowledge about biology and a unique ability to breakdown complex biological concepts in a way that is easy to understand with examples and analogies!
I have been a Wize instructor for 8 years teaching first-year undergraduate biology courses. I’ve also been a private tutor at the high-school level teaching chemistry, biology, physics and math for many years and the university level teaching biology, biochemistry and upper-year cell biology courses. At Western, I worked as a Teaching Assistant for third and fourth-year biology courses, worked for Western's Centre for Teaching and Learning teaching other teaching assistants and professors how to teach Science and I served on the Biology Undergraduate Education Committee. My teaching has also been acknowledged by the university when in 2021 I was awarded the Biology Graduate Student Teaching Award. I am passionate about undergraduate education and can't wait to teach you about biology!
