About Shania L
Hi, I’m Shania! I’m passionate about teaching biology and helping students gain confidence in science. I love creating engaging lessons, simplifying complex topics, and seeing that “aha!” moment when things finally click. Outside of teaching, I enjoy building community through initiatives like Practical Philosophy Vancouver and volunteering with organizations that support STEM education for youth.
My Education and Credentials
I hold a Master’s degree in Biology from the University of British Columbia, where my research focused on hypoxia tolerance in fish and the role of mitochondria in cellular adaptation. During my studies, I gained extensive teaching experience across undergraduate biology courses (BIOL 112, BIOL 180, and Science One), where I led tutorials, designed interactive lessons, and supported students in mastering foundational concepts.
How I Can Help You Succeed
My goal as an instructor is to make science approachable, engaging, and empowering. I specialize in breaking down challenging biology, chemistry, and physics concepts into clear, step-by-step explanations, using real-world examples and analogies. Whether you’re preparing for exams, building foundational skills, or just trying to feel more confident in class, I can adapt my teaching style to meet your needs.
My Teaching Background
I have worked as both a Teaching Assistant and Senior Teaching Assistant at UBC, where I managed course logistics, mentored other TAs, and facilitated workshops on inclusive teaching practices. Beyond the university classroom, I run a private tutoring business where I teach math and science to students in grades 7–12, tailoring lessons to each learner’s pace and goals. I’ve also developed and delivered interactive STEM programs for Indigenous youth in northern British Columbia, supporting accessible and inclusive science education
