How do you Know you’re Ready for an Exam?

How do you Know you’re Ready for an Exam?

The big day is here or approaching. You have studied in all the ways you could, with all the help you needed. But how do you know you’re actually ready for this exam?

Are you able to answer any question? Do you know the necessary material without any aid at all? Fear not, below is a list of things you can cross off to guarantee your preparedness.

Study guides

Ask your professor or TA for a study guide, or a list of topics that need to be reviewed more carefully. Usually, the information conveyed by the lecturers prior to the exam happens to be the most important one (yet the one we always undermine).

Study that thoroughly and understand it as well. Moreover, make your own study guide, of material you’re unsure of, or things your mind hasn’t grasped entirely yet.

Practice

Do a mock exam, they may be expensive, but sometimes worth it. Also, many professors post practice exams, take full advantage of that, as you might see some of the practice questions on the actual exam.

Ask a friend or classmate to quiz you aloud. While you’re answering, you hear yourself responding to the question, and you’re also re-processing the information in your brain, which gives you a higher chance to retain the material.

When you’re being quizzed aloud, you’re working your knowledge a different way; without pen and paper (or keyboard), you’re speaking the information and encoding it differently and strongly in your mind.

Study Groups

Join a study group. Your intention is to be ready for the exam, so logically, you should know as much as your classmates do, or more. If that is not the case, use the opportunity to ask all the questions you have. Kindly ask for their notes and help.

The benefit of a study group is that each individual brings more perspective to the table.

Understand

As you near the exam, and the end of your study period, you should be able to interpret the information skillfully. A trick to ensure that you know the material well is by elaborating on it.

Hence, understand EVERYTHING! Don’t simply answer the question, explain it as well; by doing so, you’re demonstrating comprehension, and mastery of the topic! Alternatively, if you explain and don’t quite understand it, you’ll clearly know you’re not ready and need to study more.

By explaining in your own words, you’re processing better.

How do you feel?

Another way to tell if you’re 100% ready for your exam is through your feelings. If you have reason to worry or feeling anxious; you should revise more or find different techniques to study while you have the time. Otherwise, if you’re confident; and more importantly, positive, then you’re definitely ready.

All that is left now is to do the exam. If you feel a bit nervous, or stressed, worry not; it’s normal to be concerned, after all, it’s game day!
