Living at home during your first year has its ups and downs:
Ups: You are already comfortable in your environment and can save some money.
Downs: Living at home gives the illusion that nothing’s changed and you can easily miss out on things that are happening on campus.
To help you navigate these somewhat tricky waters, here are three things to keep in mind:
1. Carve out dedicated study and assignment time
This sounds too simple, but let us explain. It’s incredibly easy to procrastinate from doing those pesky psychology readings by spending time with friends and family. If you carve out dedicated study and assignment times, you can plan your get-togethers around them and still get your work done.
2. Balance your time at home and on campus
There are so many amazing clubs, events, and opportunities happening on your university campus every day. Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to miss them if you are only going to campus for classes. Balancing your time at home and on campus can help you get the best of both worlds. With many Universities going online, so are the extracurriculars! Make sure to pay attention to group chat,s Facebook groups, and email communications from the University so that you can get involved, online!
3. Be wary of ruts
Treating university like high school, where things like missing an assignment or a few days of school rarely impact your final grade, can lead to some trouble down the road. Be prepared to change your routine and adapt to a new schedule, because it’s much easier to avoid a rut than to get out of one.
