How to Overcome the Challenges of Learning Online
Accessible anytime and anywhere the benefits of studying online are undeniable. eLearning allows you to study at your own pace and return to content you may not have gotten on the first round.
However, this is not to say there is not a learning curve to studying online. Read on to check out the top five challenges of learning online and how we at Wize suggest you overcome them!
1. Distractions
Distractions are a struggle no matter how you study, and studying for exams online only adds to the list. Like any other time you’re studying, make sure you put your phone away or on do not disturb. And to make sure you don’t check your Facebook or begin to shop online, make sure all the tabs on your browser are study-related.
If you are the type of person who needs to check a notification as soon as you see it, there are tonnes of really helpful apps you can get for your computer and phone that will help eliminate notification distractions.
We would suggest the apps Self Control and Cold Turkey - on both you get to set your own restrictions and still have access to the internet but are locked out from social media, email, and other apps that take up your valuable study time. It is all about the out of sight out of mind mentality!
2. Time Management
Sometimes the very reasons why online study tools are so appealing are also their biggest challenge. The ability to go through the content at your own time sounds like the best solution to the hectic life of a student.
Although, you may find yourself lacking the discipline to find the right time to fit it into your timetable. If this is you, create your ideal study space, make your home a study vibe, settle into a table at the library.
Wherever it is, write yourself a schedule of what you want to get done in your time there. Hold yourself accountable during that time and then allow yourself to relax afterward!
3. Technology
For optimal performance, make sure whatever study space you set up for yourself you have a strong internet connection, without it, you will not be able to access the Wize resources. And make sure to use Google Chrome or Firefox over Safari for the fastest loading time.
4. Learning Community
One of the biggest adjustments to learning online can come when you need to ask your instructor a question. Formulating questions via email and slow response times can be hard which is why giving yourself lots of time to study is so important.
Make sure you begin studying with lots of time before your exam this will allow you to get a grasp on what concepts you need extra help with. Wize instructors will get back to your questions as quickly as they can.
However, for larger questions, remember your professors continue to be a resource as you prepare for exams.
5. Motivation
Finding the motivation to study can be hard under any circumstance so here are some tips to keep the motivation high well working through your modules. Start your day off right, set an alarm and get up early!
Just because you are working solo doesn't mean it is a good idea to laze around until you feel like working - because that time may not come. DO NOT work where you sleep! If you stay in bed to study you will find yourself a lot lazier and unmotivated compared to if you get up and work at the kitchen table.
Finally, make a schedule. If you set up what you want to get done by noon then you won’t feel guilty about going for lunch or the gym before moving on to the next lesson. Maintaining your motivation is all about finding a life-study balance that works for you!
