How to Overcome Exam Anxiety
Exams don’t just bring a hurdle of evaluations that we have to deal with, but they also bring a plethora of emotions that worry us even more.
Unfortunately, a lot of university students experience exam anxiety and don’t always cope in the best ways, which in turn can affect their grades.
It’s very important to find techniques to overcome those anxieties for your own health. This is why we have listed some ways how you can overcome exam anxiety:
1- Be prepared
Don’t leave all the revision and studying for a later time when exam season is approaching. Time flies quick, especially when you’re overworked with several deadlines for assignments and schoolwork.
You get your syllabus at the beginning of the semester, so you know when the exams are. Instead of probably cramming a few days prior to the exam, start studying weeks early; small by small information, so you’re processing more often and are proactively ready.
By doing so, you’re reducing your stress of “not knowing anything”.
2- Be positive
When people are stressed and are afraid of failure, they often tend to say, “I don’t think I can do it”, “I’m probably going to fail”.
Here is the thing, if you don’t encourage yourself, you’re not being practical and helpful. You have a lot going on and many evaluations lined up, the last thing you need is mediocrity.
Sometimes, we need a friend or a partner to encourage us and make us feel better, but in some situations, they cannot always be there. Hence, you’ve got to be your person, so be cheerful and supportive towards yourself!
Tell yourself how amazing you are, and that you can do it, say it out loud if needed, as long as it makes you feel good and confident that you can get through your exams with good grades.
3- Address your problems
If there is some material you haven’t entirely understood yet, do not keep it at the last minute! You’d be just adding to your anxiety.
Start your revision with the difficult information. It’s annoying, but at least you’ll be done with the hard part first and can carry on with the rest of your revision, without worrying. Also, go see your professors or T.A if you have any questions.
Don’t let your problems be unanswered. Reach out and address your issues, it’s definitely going to make you feel better and reduce your anxiety.
4- Be Healthy
Self-care is very important, and you shouldn’t neglect that, nonetheless of how busy you are. Proper nutrition and exercise have proven to reduce stress and anxiety.
Take a small break in between study sessions and do some exercises. Not only will that boost your metabolism, but it also refreshes your mind.
It’s even better if you have the time to go to the gym! Alongside that, eat nutritious food; the kind that’s going to vitalize you. Lots of iron, vitamins and protein will help you a lot.
