How to Overcome Mental Block While Studying
We all know those days and nights, you're trying so hard to focus, but every time you look down at your notes your eyes glaze over. Study block is real and can be so frustrating when you need to cram or study for an exam coming up. However, as a student you know giving up is not a viable solution so here at Wize, we’ve compiled some tips and tricks for overcoming mental block and get back to studying to get the best grades ever!
1. Step away from your desk
Go for a walk, call family, go to the gym, have a shower… anything! When your brain is fried there is sometimes nothing more you can do. That means it is time for a study break in order to come back fresh! What you do is totally up to you! It is just important to get up, get the blood moving again to wake up and stimulate your brain. Whatever you do, do not let yourself strew in your brain block, and don’t layer coffee on top of your brain block; nothing will be retained and you’ll stay stagnant.
2. Clear the clutter
After your break, head back to the work. But this time instead of looking at a million sheets of paper or 20 windows and tabs clear everything you do not need. It will not help to have to stare at all the work you have coming up, save everything you have to do next, close it up, and focus on the task at hand.
3. Set a schedule
Yes, your schedule should include breaks, meals, and shifts between units, and subjects. Set yourself a study guide or outline and stick to it. Hold yourself accountable and tell yourself you’ll work on math unit one in the morning but only until you break for lunch, in which after you can switch to unit two.
4. Set goals for each day
Set small and attainable goals to allow yourself to feel accomplished. If you tell yourself you’re going to go over 5 units and a practice test all in 3 hours you are just going to leave yourself feeling discouraged and unproductive. Only you know the speed you can work at, so set realistic goals for each study session so you can walk away proud of yourself and ready to move on to the next sections in the next block of time.
5. Talk it out with a friend
If you’re stuck in your head about a topic ask a classmate or friend to talk it out with you. Sometimes speaking out loud or trying to teach someone a topic will make it a lot simpler to conceptualize yourself. Chances are you are overcomplicating it in your head and talking will someone with force you to simplify it.
6. Prioritize the sections you know you need to focus most on
This is what you should do if time is running shot! Make a shortlist of the important concepts you know you need extra help with and prioritize them! This will force you to condense your notes and make them seem less daunting.
