Study Tips for Success

Your undergraduate degree - like many other things - is all about how you play the game. People who excel in school most often can thank their study habits for their success.

Therefore, for you to find overwhelming success in exam season it is not necessarily about studying harder but studying smarter.

The Wizeprep Study Pass subscription is designed to help you study smarter, and 98% of students improve their grades after using it, but it's not the only thing we know to help you study more efficiently.

Read on for a list of the top study habits Wizeprep has realized benefit students most when there are not enough hours in the day to get through it all!

1. Get rid of the distractions!

Yes, that means your phone. If your technology is nearby it is inevitable that you pick it up to check group Snapchats and text messages. Set yourself up for success right away and put your phone in a drawer or even another room. It's all about out of sight, out of mind mentality. And without your phone, you can pay full attention to the task at hand.

2. Stick to print! (If you can)

We know that in today's education climate this may be a difficult task to actually accomplish. However, that being said having something you can tangibly hold on to, highlight and flip through is always better than looking at a computer screen.

This also doesn't mean just books - type out your notes and print them or print your lecture slides and write on them. Studies suggest that when studying scrolling and clicking becomes more of a pattern and less about knowledge retention, so if you print and read you’ll remember more!

3. Exercise

The benefits of physical activity have been well established. Getting out and being active provides endorphins that wake you up and help you focus. So even if you feel like there are not enough hours in a day, try your best to get to the gym or go for a walk, because it will make the time you do study even more effective.

4. Change your sensory

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times. DO NOT STUDY WHERE YOU SLEEP! Go to a coffee shop, library, bookstore or even as close as your dining room table as long as you're out of your bedroom. Your bedroom should be for sleeping and looking at your bed while trying to do school work or even working in your bed makes it very easy to flip on Netflix.

5. Find the study method that is right for you!

  1. Thwart the ‘Curve of Forgetting’: This approach to studying is not only for exam season but all semester long. The concept suggests when students learn the material in a lecture they have the ability (if they actively taking notes, and paying attention) to retain 80% of the material - as long as you review your notes within 24 hours. Fortunately, this effect is cumulative, meaning the more times you go over the material you will be able to recall the information in shorter amounts of time.
  2. Take the Practice Test: Take advantage of profs and old students who may have old exams and texts you can use to study. This will give you an idea of what you have ahead, show you what you understand and what you need to work on. It will also give you an idea about the speed you will need to complete that prof’s exams.
