A good MCAT score depends on your target schools, GPA, section scores and applicant category. Compare your score with each school’s published academic profile and current requirements. Class averages and medians describe groups of students; meeting them does not establish your chance of admission.

What is the average MCAT score?

The average for all test takers is about 500.6. The average for students who are accepted to MD programs is noticeably higher, which is why a score near the overall average is usually not enough on its own for MD admission.

Total scores run from 472 to 528. Each of the four sections is scored from 118 to 132, and the total is the sum of the four.

Do section scores matter?

Yes. Schools see all four section scores, not just the total, and 11 schools in our data publish section minimums, mostly in Canada: Toronto asks for 125 in each section (one may be 124), Queen’s for 125, Western for 126 outside its designated pathways, and SFU, Dalhousie and Saskatchewan for 123 for the applicants they name. Alberta and Calgary ask non-Alberta applicants for 128 in CARS. In the US, Emory (124), Baptist (123) and Mississippi (121) publish section floors. Rules change each cycle and often depend on your applicant group, so check each school’s current requirements.
