How to Survive Morning Class

How to Survive a Morning Class

As soon as you see an 8:30 am class on your schedule, your first impulse may be to either cry, skip it, or try and change the whole thing. However, there are ways to make these classes bearable and sometimes even enjoyable (as improbable as that might sound).

1. Go in with an Open Mind

Our preconceived ideas of the horrors that may be an 8:30 class can be transformed into a positive mindset that will actually allow you to retrieve information from your professor.

Think of the benefits of getting your class over so early in the day, think about why you’re taking the class, and lastly, remind yourself that this class will likely benefit you in your university career. You can get through it!

2. Make Friends in the Class

Other than the motivation to learn, having friends in a class is like having a support system to grow with and experience the lecture or lab with. They understand what it’s like to be in a similar program or stream, and also what it’s like to wake up early. If you are extroverted and get your energy from other people, this can also be a great pick me up.

3. Prep for the Morning

It is so much easier to make it to class when some of your work is done the night before. A couple of tips to make your morning easier are choosing an outfit before you sleep, packing your bag, and preparing something to eat for breakfast. These small choices will ensure that you aren’t overwhelmed when you wake up and that everything is done in a timely manner.

4. Get into a Routine

It is almost impossible to wake up for a morning class after days of waking up at noon. Getting yourself into a routine where you wake up at around the same time every day will make your classes feel normal and your body will respond better to the sleep cycle.

5. Sleep Early

As mentioned in the last point, sleeping a decent amount will ensure you are able to get up for your class. Don’t try and run off a couple hours of sleep, because your mind and body will not thank you for it.

Good luck with your early classes this semester, and remember, no one will mind if you show up in sweatpants.
