Why You Should Get Involved in University
Extracurriculars have always been seen as an essential experience to any student’s university career.
An article by Alexander Astin shared that almost any type of student involvement in university was beneficial in improving a student’s overall learning and development. If you’re thinking to yourself, why should I get involved in university? Check out these 5 reasons to convince you!
1. Extracurriculars Improve Your Skill Sets
Getting involved in university can be more than just joining a club, it also includes student government, joining a sports team, volunteering or being in the school play! One of the best reasons to get involved in university is that it gives you the opportunity to improve and develop skills you can’t be taught in your classes.
While classes are a great way to learn content and informational knowledge, getting involved in clubs and extracurriculars help to improve your soft skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership and organization. This will help you become a better-rounded student while developing valuable skills that are sure to impress your future employer!
2. Trying Something You’ve Never Done Before
The university experience is more than just your classes and assignments. Unfortunately, it’s easy to feel as though you’ve pigeon-holed yourself by dedicating four or five years of your life to explore and understand as much as you can about one industry.
Getting involved in your college is a great way to break out of your comfort zone and discover something new. Many universities and colleges have a club for almost anything you can think of. If there’s a skill you always to learn or an interest you wanted to explore, extracurriculars are a great way to test the waters on a multitude of different things!
3. Finding Your Passion
The best part about getting involved in university is finding an interest or passion you didn’t see coming. Joining an extracurricular in university is the best way to try anything and everything with no consequences. If you’ve always thought you could be a great writer, apply to join the school newspaper!
If you’ve ever had the slightest interest in juggling or fencing, see if there’s a club you can join. This is a great opportunity to branch away from your degree and try something new.
Or lean in even further to your degree and continue to learn about what you love about your program through academic clubs. The sky's the limit when it comes to trying out new interests in university.
4. Meeting New People
Getting involved in campus is a great way to meet people with similar interest as you! It’s inspiring to know that you’re all there for the same reason and working towards the same goal. When you spend so much time in classes or studying, hanging out with a different group of people while doing something you enjoy is so important to help ease stress and anxiety.
Being involved allows you to interact with people from different programs and backgrounds that you wouldn’t necessarily meet otherwise. Making these connections can be valuable as they can help teach you about new topics or broaden your perspective.
5. Resume Boosters
One of the best parts about getting involved on campus is that it’s an automatic resume booster. If you’re someone who has had difficulty obtaining an internship for the summer or you’ve found yourself without job experience by fourth year, joining a club or group is a great way to obtain some practical job skills.
By getting involved on campus, it shows potential employers that you have good organizational skills, are a team player and that you’re able to manage your time. Employers will enjoy seeing that you have interests outside of your degree and that you’re willing to go above and beyond. In addition, this will add more personality to your resume and allow employers to learn more about you as a person.
