Weirdest Clubs at McGill University
University student lead clubs are some of the quirkiest ways to make friends and loosen up. There might be no better way to spend a Friday evening than chopping wood with your comrades or sharing your unmatched knowledge of bicycles with the world.
There are a lot of great reasons to get involved and join a club at University. This week we are counting down the weirdest clubs at McGill University that are sure to brighten your semester.
1. Flat Bike Club
Getting around Montreal’s downtown core can be arduous in a car and tiresome on foot. The Flat Bike Club is a collective group that encourages cycling through the sharing of knowledge and tools. They offer workshops on bike repairs and teach you how to use tools so that you can get the job done yourself.
Anyone is free to volunteer during shifts, attend meetings and ride along. Their mission statement: “To make bicycling more accessible, promote sustainability, and develop a greater sense of community”. All types of bikes are welcomed.”
2. Plate Club
As its name suggests, the Plate Club is a dishware rental service. Their small stands are always manned by volunteers smiling brighter than the plates they lease. Their goal is to offer free dishware to students, faculty, and community groups in order to reduce waste on campus.
They carry a variety of items such as plates, cups, mugs, wine glasses, cutlery and more. As McGill University works towards carbon neutrality, clubs that promote environmental sustainability are central to achieving this goal. Just remember to return your plate when you're done!
3. Quidditch Club
If you have ever taken a load off on the lower campus field, you have surely seen a large group of individuals running around with brooms between their legs. As you wonder what madness you are witnessing, you hear someone scream “pass the snitch.”
The Quidditch Club is everything you expect- a Harry Potter dream come true. Every year teams represent McGill in multiple competitions in North America.
With their most recent achievement, coming in second place nationally. McQuid offers a chance for all types of people to experience something unique and maybe find a few Horcruxes along the way.
4. Woodsmen Club
Do you like chopping, sawing, splitting or climbing wood?
If you answered yes to all these questions, the Woodsmen Club is for you. Sharpen your axes comrades because practice starts at dawn. The Woodsmen club fits beautifully with Macdonald campus, which features sprawling green spaces and a lakefront view.
Annual competitions against prominent Canadian Universities force you to stay in shape and hone your skills. If you are looking for a unique way to stay in shape and widen your circle of friends, chopping large heaps of wood is clearly the way to do it.
Do something for yourself this semester and join a club. With so many unique options, there is definitely a club for every type of student.
