McGill First Year Survival Guide

Welcome to McGill University, where the learning never stops, but neither does the on-campus construction. I am sure you are excited about entering one of the finest institutions of higher learning in the world.

But where does one begin? Do I highlight McGill’s reputation for excellence or tempt you with stories of flooded streets and endless detour signs?

If I were you, and I once was, a brief stop at student services will get you orientated and a meander through the lower field will clear your mind. While you’re there, take a load off, ease your mind and take a nap on the luscious green space unless, of course, it's white from the snow!

Now that my five-year tenure at McGill is at its end, I wondered whether future students could profit from my missteps. Here are 5 tips and tricks to delay the inevitable meltdowns that come with being a university student.

1. CaPS (Career Planning Services - https://www.mcgill.ca/caps/

Don’t worry, I am not suggesting that you plan your career in your first week of university; CaPS is far more than just an employment center. Yes, you can schedule a mock interview, attend a CV clinic and plan for graduate school, but you can also consult their vast resource center and pick up info on mentoring programs and studying abroad. On top of it all, they usually give out free quality stuff!

2. Study Spaces:

McGill is definitely one of the largest real estate holders in Montreal, but that doesn’t mean there is a chair for everyone. The downtown campus is incredibly busy during exam periods so listen closely. The Blackadder, Education and Marvin Duchow Music libraries are untapped goldmines. You will thank me later.

3. Health Services

McGill makes a fair attempt at caring for all of its students’ health concerns. McGill Student Health Services can help you with prescription renewals, STI testing and offers an urgent care clinic for those needing immediate attention. Also, keep an ear out for the therapy dogs, because sometimes holding a puppy is all you really need.

4. Cheap Food

Montreal is the food capital of Canada, but you can’t afford any of it. Put some change together because you’re going to Super Sandwich on 1115 Sherbrook West. This clean, family-run convenient store offers a great selection of vegetarian and meat options at student-friendly prices.

Alternatively, McGill Pizza on Milton is both satisfying and convenient. Lastly, Midnight Kitchen in the Shatner (aka Captain Kirk) Building offers free vegan food every day from 12 to 1 PM. Donations are welcomed.

5. Best advice I ever got

Don’t worry so much. Your first year should be a test run so enjoy what the city and campus have to offer. Remember, most McGill Masters programs only look at your last two years of study anyways.

Armed with this information, you should be unstoppable. Good luck and remember to always have fun!
