Why You Should Live Off Campus

Why You Should Live Off-Campus

For many students, living on campus can lose its appeal quickly after you’ve done it for one or two years.

Whether you’re starting to outgrow the craziness of on-campus living or just in need of more space, there are a lot of great reasons to move off-campus.

Check out these tips that will convince you why you should live off-campus!

1. It Saves You Money

While looking at the prices of off-campus housing for the first time might seem daunting, in the long run, it’s usually a lot cheaper than living on residence.

When you live in residence, you’re paying the extra unseen fees of cleaning, utilities, and everything that helps keep your residence running for everyone who lives there.

When living off-campus, you’re completely in control of how much you spend which can help you save money if you budget properly.

However, it is still important to weigh the costs of how much you can afford with off-campus housing. Look into housing fees that might slip past you when searching for a house such as how much it will take you to get to campus. Find the times when it’s the cheapest to use everyday amenities such as water when doing laundry or taking a shower to save some easy money!

2. More Space

No longer are you going to be stuck in an 8-by-8 foot room that you have to share with a second person. By living off-campus, you can find a place that best suits your housing needs.

Whether you need 2 bathrooms or 1 or you need a large closet, off-campus housing gives you more opportunities to find the space you need. Off-campus apartments and houses allow for more space and privacy.

This is great for those that need to get out of the hustle and bustle of on-campus living and need a little more downtime to keep their mental health strong. Most importantly, you get to avoid the insanity of fire alarms and surprise evacuations.

3. Better Support System

When you live on campus, there is always the chance that you won’t be able to choose who you live with. When you live off-campus, you’re choosing people who you believe you’ll live best with and who can offer you the best off-campus experience.

Because of this, most people live with friends or like-minded individuals that they can trust and get along with. This is great because you’re able to create a strong support system with those around you. Not to mention, what’s more fun than getting to be with your friends around the clock?

4. Different Housing Options

While many universities give you a variety of student living options, nothing compares to the abundance of opportunities you’ll have when looking for a place off-campus. When you begin looking for off-campus housing, you begin to realize what’s important to you and what isn’t.

Would you rather live in an apartment or a house? Would you rather have 3 floors or 2? Is a large communal area more important to you than large rooms or vice versa?

There are so many options out there and it’s a really exciting experience to embark on. For the first time, you get full control of your living space and you can make the decisions about how you want to live.

5. Get to Know Your City

Living off-campus means that you’ll most likely no longer be a 5-minute walk to campus or other students. Even if you’re close to campus, you’ll still be living alongside city residents rather than just students.

There is a completely different vibe when you live off-campus rather than when you live on. Because of this, you’ll have the opportunity to better explore the city you’re living in until you graduate.

As you’ll no longer be completely cooped up on campus, you’re more likely to want to see what’s around you away from school. You’ll get to explore the best grocery stores, what restaurants you enjoy and your favorite place to grab a late-night snack. It’s the best way to learn about everything your city has to offer!

6. Real World Responsibilities

When you live off-campus for the first time, you’re choosing to fully take care of yourself without extra help. This is where your cooking, cleaning, and organizing skills will be put to the test.

For once, you won’t have your mom picking up after you or an in-residence manager helping you when something goes wrong with your appliances.

This is a great opportunity for you to start creating habits and structures that will last you the rest of your life. It’s one of the best reasons to live off-campus because you finally have the freedom to mature and really control your life to the fullest.
