Work Play Balance

While trying to maintain straight As, pay rent and eat something, it’s no wonder you only have time for limited human interaction. Here at Wize, we believe you can still maintain a social life and be a responsible student. Follow along as we list some effective time management techniques that can help you find some equilibrium in your life.

1. Create a Semester Calendar

University is a lot of things but rarely is it ever a surprise. As every professor must submit a syllabus before the start of the semester, you will always know what to expect. With all your due dates in hand, grab a calendar and start recording all of your assignments.

Hang your “four months at a glance” above your desk and start striking through days as you complete a paper or reading. Take a picture of it and store it on your phone so you always know what’s on the horizon to better plan your weeks. 2. Form a Note Sharing Group

If you know a couple of trustworthy classmates, consider creating a Google Doc to consolidate everyone’s notes. This way, if you miss a class, you’ll have something to fall back on and panic is averted. We are not encouraging you to skip class, but sometimes there just isn’t a choice. Moreover, studying for midterms and finals will be much easier if all the course content is in one place.

3. Meal Prep for the Week

Food is fuel and if you’re fueling yourself with garbage, the output won’t be much different. Pick a day, any day, to prepare all your meals for the week. Pick up some mason jars or heat-safe containers and create meals for a week or beyond. Get a slow cooker, or two, going while you’re studying or away at class. There’s nothing better than enjoying healthy home-cooked meals you made yourself. Less time in the kitchen means more time for studying and enjoying time with friends.

4. Schedule Daily Physical Activity

Whether it’s a brisk walk in nature or a twenty-minute gym session, do your absolute best to be active. Just short bursts of physical activity can give you that extra boost of energy that will help you through your day. You are increasing productivity and encouraging body and mind synchronization which helps with clarity and focus. Use time wisely and listen to a downloaded audiobook or a pre-recorded lecture.

5. Set a Fixed Time to End Work Each Day

Most people will operate more efficiently and effectively if they know there is an approaching time limit. Consider stopping work at 8 pm every day and watch how productive you become. Spend the remainder of your night meditating, journaling or, if you must, Netflixing to give your grey matter a rest.
There is no single recipe. Finding balance is an individual exercise. But in the quest for equilibrium, we ultimately learn more about ourselves in the process. Remember that Wize offers tons of helpful tips and tricks to make your university experience memorable for all the right reasons.
