My name is Tess and I am currently a PhD candidate in chemistry at the University of Alberta. I completed my undergraduate degree in biochemistry, and now am focused in the area of chemical biology and organic chemistry. My favourite courses to teach are organic chemistry, general chemistry, and biochemistry! I have been tutoring students in these courses for a number of years now, and have just recently joined Wizeprep's team of excellent instructors. In my courses, I do my best to simplify concepts by providing an organized set of notes, and use plain language to describe concepts to my students. In high school (and even first year university) chemistry was actually my least favourite subject! I was always really frustrated that the "why" of chemistry was never explained with a satisfying answer, and didn't have any context for why the course topics were important. Once I took organic chemistry and biochemistry courses, this all clicked into place for me and I began to like it so much that I pursued a PhD. In my teaching I do my very best to remember how frustrated I felt in those courses, and of course include a comment on the "why" of chemistry to make it more understandable and give my students some context.
