Factoring a Difference of Squares

There is a special type of quadratic (degree 2) polynomial called a difference of squares, it has the form a2−b2\large a^2-b^2, and it turns out there is a short-cut to factoring these polynomials.

Example
Factor a2−b2a^2-b^2.

We can rewrite this as a2+0a−b2a^2+0a-b^2.


So, the short-cut for factoring a difference of squares is

a2−b2=(a−b)(a+b)\Large\boxed{\colorFive{a}^2-\colorFour{b}^2=(\colorFive{a}-\colorFour{b})(\colorFive{a}+\colorFour{b})}

Example: Factoring a Difference of Squares

Factor the following polynomials fully.

a) x2−9x^2-9

Notice that we have a difference of squares

x2−32=(x−3)(x+3)\begin{aligned} &x^2-3^2\\ =&(x-3)(x+3) \end{aligned}



b) 16−x216-x^2

Notice that we have a difference of squares

42−x2=(4−x)(4+x)\begin{aligned} &4^2-x^2\\ =&(4-x)(4+x) \end{aligned}




c) 4y2−254y^2-25

Notice that we have a difference of squares

(2y)2−52=(2y−5)(2y+5)\begin{aligned} &(2y)^2-5^2\\ =&(2y-5)(2y+5) \end{aligned}
