Status of Shares
Understanding the terminology is important for solving equity related accounting questions. Shares can vary in status and are labelled accordingly.
Authorized Shares
- Maximum number of shares that a company can issue
- Can be unlimited
- Does not represent any issued or outstanding shares
Wize Tip
In solving any equity related questions, never use the authorized shares number of any calculation.
Issued Shares
- Shares that have been issued (sold) by the company.
- Includes outstanding shares and treasury shares.
Outstanding Shares
- Shares that were issued and are still held by shareholders.
Treasury Shares
- Shares that were issued but repurchased by the company and kept in treasury.
- Treasury shares can be reissued.
Retired Shares
- Shares that were issued but repurchased and cancelled by the company.
- Retired shares cannot be reissued.
