Gestalt Principles
Gestalt principles of perceptual organization help us understand how our brain takes 2D images on our retina and perceives whole objects and scenes.

Figure and Ground - we tend to organize images into figure and background

Proximity - objects that are close together are grouped

Similarity - objects which are more similar are more likely to be grouped together

Continuity - we tend to perceive smooth, curved lines rather than jagged lines

Closure - we tend to fill in the gaps to make whole objects
