The Chemical Senses - Smell & Taste

PAGE BREAK

Smell

Odor molecules bind to olfactory receptors at the top of the nasal cavity.

In some cases, memories can be triggered by smell more effectively than by other means.

Watch Out!
While all other senses send information to the thalamus to be relayed to other parts of the brain, smell does not.

Taste

Food and beverage molecules bind to taste receptors on the tongue.

Taste buds are made up of groups of taste receptors.

There are 5 basic tastes:

  • Sour
  • Sweet
  • Salty
  • Bitter
  • Umami (savouriness)
