4 Ways to Know You Party Too Much in College

Partying in college is as normal as going to classes. For many, this is the first taste of freedom that they’ll have experienced and they want to revel in it, which is great.

Going to parties can be a great stress reliever and a way to make friends.

But there are limits and sometimes going to a party can become someone’s main focus over their schooling. So, for those who find themselves partying a lot, how do you know if you’re partying too much? Ask yourself these four questions.

Am I Going to my Classes?

Do you find yourself too tired to get to classes? Are too hungover to focus if you do go to your classes? Are you participating in classes and learning?

If you’re missing more than two classes a week because of partying then you're doing too much partying. You are in school to get a degree and while school isn’t everything, you are paying to be in these classes.

Are You Handing in Assignments?

What do your grades look like? Are your grades suffering because you are at a party and not working on assignments? Are you completing all the work required of you?

Finding a balance between going out with friends and getting your work done is important. You want to make sure that you’re finishing all your assignments. You might be able to get away with not going to classes and still pass, but if you don’t hand in assignments you will fail.

How Much Time Do I Spend Home?

How often are you at parties? How often do you come home after midnight? Do you spend more time at parties or at home? Your dorm room shouldn’t be just a place to sleep.

It should be a place to study and to live in. If you find yourself at parties more than in your room, or if you find your laundry and chores piling up, then you aren’t spending enough time in your room.

How Often Are You Drunk?

Do you find yourself wanting to get drunk all the time? Is being drunk important to you having fun? More students than you’d think to develop the beginnings of alcoholism in college.

This isn’t to say that you are developing it, but being drunk more than 3 times a week is a sure sign that you need to pull back on your drinking.

Or if you find yourself having more than 8 drinks at a time in a semi-regular fashion, you need to consider drinking less.

If you find yourself needing alcohol every night or wanting to party daily to relieve stress, please go see your school’s mental health professional. There are better ways to deal with stress than alcohol.
