Best Tips and Tricks For MCAT Chemistry

I’m Avneet and I am one of Wize’s online educators! I wanted to share some of my best tips and tricks for tackling chemistry questions on the MCAT as I know that writing the MCAT is probably a brand new experience for many of you.

I wrote the MCAT after my second year in university and when I was preparing for it, like many other students, I felt overwhelmed and was unsure of the best strategies to tackle passages.

I kept practicing and ended up scoring in the 97th percentile (and in the 99th percentile in the chemistry/physics section) so I wanted to share some tips with you that I found to be very helpful!

After using these tips consistently while completing practice passages, I found that I had more and more time to spare, and timing is one of the students’ biggest struggles with the MCAT.

3 Best Study Tips for MCAT Chemistry

1) For chemistry specifically, you should aim to skim through each passage in a minute or two.

In this time you’ll want to highlight words that are unfamiliar to you, words that help describe the main idea in each paragraph, and words that are italicized, along with any numerical values!

2) Don’t waste time trying to understand each figure or graph while skimming the passage!

I would just take a look at what the axes are labelled as on a graph, but would not spend more than a few seconds on any image while going through the passage for the first time. If a question asks you something relating to a figure, that’s the time to go back and take a look!

3) Process of elimination will be your best tool for MCAT Chemistry.

After reading a question, I always recommend finding the relevant area in the passage for that specific question. Read that part again to see if you need any information from there to answer the question.

Then, if you know an option is definitely wrong, start by crossing it out! After that, you should be able to eliminate the other choices and select the best answer!

If you liked these tips, you'll benefit from my MCAT General Chemistry course which is a part of a full MCAT prep course by Wize.

It’s going to walk you through all of the chemistry content you’ll need for the MCAT so you won’t even need to look at a textbook. I’ve also included video solutions to passages so you can actually follow my thought process as I take up passage solutions with you.
