Free Online Resources for University Students in light of Coronavirus

Although we’re all stuck at home because of coronavirus, that doesn’t mean we have to be bored or inactive. There are a lot of companies (and people!) offering free services and products that you can take advantage of. Here’s our list of free online resources that students can take advantage of in light of the coronavirus outbreak!

1. Get your Sweat On

Just because the gym’s closed, that doesn’t mean you can’t fit in some exercise. Fortunately (or unfortunately for some), there are companies offering free classes and resources online so you don’t have an excuse to not exercise. For instance, Peloton is offering a free 90-day subscription to their classes. Before you ask, no, you don’t need a workout bike to participate. They have yoga, meditation, and at-home workout classes you can access anywhere, anytime. If this isn’t your thing, you can always fall back on this classic workout video.

2. Online Meditation

The coronavirus outbreak has left many of us stressed, scared, and uncertain of the future. You might relate to constantly refreshing the news to see if there have been any new updates around the world. Although it’s important, sometimes you’ve got to unplug and reset the mind to keep your sanity in check. If you’re unfamiliar with how to start meditating, that’s okay! The New York Times wrote a great article to get you started. Many instructors have started live-streaming free meditation sessions. For instance, One Yoga is streaming every day at 12 PM PST. Carolyn Anne Budgell will be hosting these sessions and you can also find her on the free meditation app, Insight Timer. Also, OsmosisMed will be hosting online events such as “Tips for Maximizing Psychological Health During Stressful Times” and “Guided Meditation: 30 Minutes to De-Stress.”

3. Free Entertainment

Who knew that staying at home all day could be so boring? Although the endless youtube clickhole is enticing, you could do with a bit of “cultured” entertainment. The Metropolitan Opera is streaming a different performance every day at 7:30 PM Eastern. Also, PBS will be streaming some of their programs for free, including Ken Burns’ famous documentary, “Baseball.” You can even visit over 500 museums and art galleries without leaving the comfort of your own home!

4. FOOD!

Restaurants are starting to close their doors for dine-in but delivery is still on the table. In fact, some companies are offering savings if you get food delivered by them. Grubhub is offering $10 off your first food delivery on their app. Also, UberEats is waiving the delivery fee for small local restaurants which is a great initiative on their part. If you’d rather do the cooking, Blue Apron offers $20 off each of your first four deliveries, totaling $80 of savings! You can also visit the Food Network’s facebook page to read up on their new “Daily Dinners” posted every day.

5. Learn Something New

Staying indoors doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. Duolingo, for instance, is a great app to learn languages and it’s completely free. If you want to learn Mandarin, I'd really recommend HelloChinese which is also completely free. If you want to stay on top of your courses, here at Wize, we offer a free 15-minute lesson with one of our expert-level Wize Profs. Just look up the subject you need help on!
