
How to Eat Healthy as a UBC Student
Food is AMAZING! I completely agree with you on that... Eating is a huge part of university life. As young adults, we have the freedom to eat whatever it is we like, whenever we want. I will share with you guys 3 super basic tips that will help you become a healthier and eventually a happier student!
Pay Attention to your Diet

Wow, do we even need to discuss this? As students, we need to prioritize our health! If we don't eat right then we're much more likely to get sick, causing us to miss lectures and fall behind in our courses. Not worth it, right?
Eat healthy by balancing your diet. It’s important to have some healthy snacks between your classes, you could leave a banana inside your backpack just in case you get hungry after that long lecture!
It’s also helpful to plan out where you’ll be eating throughout the day, this way you'll have a clear vision of how your day is gonna be so you could avoid walking around the campus with an empty stomach just looking for food, well in most cases - junk food.
Make sure to buy healthy ingredients so that you can cook balanced meals. Ground meat is the easiest to cook, frozen vegetables are slightly cheaper than fresh ones and don’t forget fruits! Oranges, Bananas, Strawberries, Blueberries, mmmm! Be sure to check out deals and sign up for grocery memberships to save money!
Make Use of Your Res Dollars

The number one reason first-year students are required to purchase a residence meal plan is so that they have access to healthy meals without having to cook or bus off-campus, so you can focus on academics and other important things! However, it is very common for students to run out of res dollars before the end of the term.
To solve this, all you have to do is simply plan by doing the math, see how much you have, then create a budget on how much you can really afford to pay for meals on the res, so you don’t go hungry during finals season when the term ends! No excuses for not having a kitchen now, eh?
Additionally, if you’re in the upper years (i.e. second or third), UBC housing offers you 5% discount or 12% if you sign up for a Chomp plan (sounds legit), so you can also take advantage of these healthy options available to you on campus!

Cook at Home

If you have a kitchen, congratulations - you’re in luck! Having a kitchen means you have the freedom to cook yourself some tasty dinner, at a minimal cost.
Even if you don’t have a kitchen, I’m sure there are students in the upper years that do have an en-suite kitchen, why don’t you politely ask if you could use theirs? Who knows… maybe you’ll find yourself making some new friends!
From my experience, I prefer cooking at home most of the time, I think the only negative to cooking at home is that it takes time and work to clean up (i.e. cleaning dishes, throwing out the trash, etc.), which isn’t that big of a deal, after all, considering how affordable it is and the health benefits you’ll get!
You also get to learn and improve your cooking skills, isn’t that just amazing? Learning how to cook takes many years for most people, so why not start now?
The UBC Cooking Club provides students with an opportunity through workshops and social events to actually learn how to cook for themselves. Check out their events here. Membership will only cost you ten bucks, and each workshop will cost you no more than five!
