Tips for Finding a Part-Time Job for Students
So you’ve weighed the pros and cons and you’ve decided you want a part-time job! While a part-time job may sound daunting when you’re already busy spending all your time studying, finishing assignments and making time to see friends, there are many pros to having a part-time job in University.
Having extra spending cash, gaining professional experience and networking are some of the many reasons students get part-time jobs. Check out these tips for finding a part-time job!
1. Decide What Kind of Part-Time Job You Want
For students, there are a bunch of different options out there for you to try. However, as you’re continuing to go to classes it’s important to decide what kind of job will best fit your school schedule.
It is also helpful to think about the reasons why you want a part-time job. If you want it to make extra cash, working retail or serving might be a great way to do that. But, if you want to gain more transferable skills, it might be helpful to look into on-campus positions.
Here are some part-time options to look into.
- Babysitting
- Bank Teller
- Barista
- Brand Ambassador
- Cashier
- Hostessing or Serving
- Freelance Blogging
- Line Cook
- Retail Sales Associate
- Social Media Assistant
- Virtual Assistant
- Teaching Assistant
- Personal Trainer
2. Check Out Your On-Campus Database
Many times, your own university or college campus is hiring students to help out in a lot of different departments such as the library, book store, science labs or the gym. Campus jobs are the most convenient part-time job for you to get as they are more likely to accommodate your busy study schedule since they recognize that school is your priority.
You are also more likely to find a job that best fits the skills you’re learning in your major and create valuable connections in your field. On-campus jobs are also a great way for you to give back to your university and connect with more people at your school.
3. Clean Up Your Resume
Cleaning up your resume is one of the most important parts of looking for any job. Remember, this will be the only thing the employer will know about you before they meet you. Even though it’s a part-time job, it’s important to ensure your resume highlights skills and experiences that make you a worthy candidate. Check out our article on Resume Writing Tips for some pointers.
4. No Experience? No Problem!
If one reason you’re aiming to get a part-time job is to gain professional experience, make sure to highlight your ambition to learn when meeting your employer. Many employers look for candidates who are motivated and willing to learn.
Emphasize the soft skills you have that are transferable to the job such as communication, organization, problem solving and teamwork. You can do this by explaining how you utilized these skills in a variety of scenarios such as working in group projects or work you’ve done for school clubs.
5. Use Online Websites such as Indeed or Kijiji
While Kijiji or Craigslist might worry some people, they are great resources to use when looking for a part-time job as a student. Many times, there are people who ask specifically for students. This is because they are looking for people to help do quick short-term jobs and understand students are always looking for opportunities to make some extra cash.
However, if you don’t feel comfortable on those sites, other job sites such as Indeed or Glassdoor are a great way to research student jobs that are available. Sites like these are great because they tend to have reviews of the company and more information about working at the company that you typically wouldn’t see on their home page.
