Tips for Self-Care When You're Really, Really Too Busy for it

The snow is melting, the grass is getting greener, classes are coming to a close...and you’re freaking out because there’s still exams to prepare for and final papers to hand in. Sound familiar? While spring is getting closer, so are the many deadlines and exam period that many students dread each year. Although it may seem impossible when you’re busy and stressed, self-care is more important at these times than ever.
Need some ideas for self-care when you’re really, really too busy for it? Read on for some top tips!

Eat Breakfast

It may be the most important meal of the day, but it’s also one that’s easy to skip when we’re on the go. If you find yourself skipping breakfast (and experiencing the resulting brain fog that comes with low blood sugar), consider stocking up on some easy-to-grab options, like Greek yogurt cups, healthy granola bars, and fruit. Your entire day will thank you for this little piece of morning self-care.

Drink Tea

Hot drinks are always comforting, but your go-to coffee may be too high in caffeine, adding to the anxiety of the busy end-of-term period. When you find yourself craving yet another cuppa, forgo the coffee in favour of a soothing cup of tea.
While some types of tea still contain caffeine, they often have much less than coffee and come with stress-busting benefits. Some Earl Grey varieties have lavender, which aids sleep and reduces anxiety. Matcha promotes alertness and concentration, without the caffeine crash, and jasmine tea also boosts the mood.

Make a Great Playlist

Nothing feels more awesome than hearing your favourite song! Even if you don’t have much time to sit back and listen, making a study playlist is a great way to have fun while working. Creating a nighttime playlist is also a great way to soothe yourself to sleep after a long day of school; my sleep playlist is one of my favourite nighttime rituals.

Take the (slightly) Long Way Home

Although you might be in a hurry to get back home after school, consider getting off the bus a stop earlier or, if your home is within walking distance, taking a different route on your walk back. Being outdoors (even if “outdoors” is in the middle of a city) can help refresh the mind, and it’s always stimulating to see new things.

Write Down 5 Things You’re Grateful For

Before bed (or when you first get up), write down five things you’re grateful for. This simple act can be grounding and help you to look for the good in each day.
Not feeling particularly grateful during your busy season? Try writing down five things that you’re looking forward to (especially when exams are finally done). There’s nothing like planning something fun to help motivate you to get those last papers handed in!
