Cramer's Rule for Solving Linear Systems

Cramer's Rule
Cramer's rule is a method that uses determinants to solve systems of linear equations.
Definition of Ai
Let An×n be an invertible matrix, and let b∈Rn be a constant vector:
A=a11a21⋮an1a12a22⋮an2………a1na11⋮ann,b=b1b2⋮bn
Define Ai to be the matrix A with column i replaced by b.
For example, A2 replaces column 2 of A:
A2=a11a21⋮an1b1b2⋮bn………a1na11⋮ann
Cramer's Rule
Each component xi of the unique solution x to the linear system Ax=b is given by:
xi=det(A)det(Ai)
Example
Write an expression for each component of the solution vector of the following SLE: [acbd][xy]=[pq].
x=acbdpqbd,y=acbdacpq

Example: Cramer's Rule
Determine the solution to the SLE using determinants:
2x+3y5x−4y=1=−3
We can write the matrix equation:
[253−4][xy]=[1−3]
Apply Cramer's rule:
x=253−41−33−4 = (2)(−4)−(3)(5)(1)(−4)−(3)(−3) = −235
y=253−4251−3 = −23(2)(−3)−(1)(5) = 2311
Therefore, the unique solution is x=−2352311.
