You are an ecologist trying to determine whether a population of rare sea lions will be able to grow and reproduce now that humans have invaded their habitat.
You know the following information:
- the ambient temperature is consistently at 12 ̊C
- the sea lions take around an hour each day to find their food
- sea lions eat around 5 kg of trout per day (trout has 10 kJ of energy per gram)
- sea lions excrete all waste product in one go (500 g of waste at 10 kJ/g)
- at rest (23 hours a day) the sea lion consumes 0.1kJ/g/hr while when actively looking for food expends 0.4 kJ/g/hr
- the sea lion is 100 kg
How much energy would any given sea lion have to allocate to growth and reproduction?
