Origin of Species
4 Activities
Consider a species of finch that is distributed along the east coast of Central America. In the following scenarios state what type of speciation is occurring.
A volcanic lava flow separates a group of finches from the main population. There is some migration across the lava flow once it cools, but eventually, this population becomes reproductively isolated and speciates.
A small group of finches are swept up in a tropical storm and eventually land on and establish on a small and distant island. They adapt to the niche on this small island to become a new species.
Changes in weather on the island lead to the extinction of some food sources. The finches used to eat medium-size seeds but now there are only large and small seeds available. Only finch with small beaks who can eat the small seeds and finch with larges beaks who can eat the big seeds survive. Eventually, reproductive isolation builds and speciation occurs resulting in a small beaked species and a large beaked species.
