Wize Concept
1. Identify the root (the longest carbon chain). If the aromatic benzene ring is the root, we call it benzene, but if the aromatic benzene ring is a branch off of the parent chain, we call it phenyl.
2. If more than one group is attached to the benzene ring, the groups are numbered with the lowest possible numbers.
3. When there are different groups on the benzene ring, if possible, give the lowest number to the group that comes first in alphabetical order.
