Naming and Properties of Alkyl Halides

  • Alkyl halides (aka haloalkanes) have replaced a hydrogen with a halogen!

Properties:
  • More polar than corresponding parent alkanes -> stronger intermolecular forces -> higher melting and boiling points
  • The smallest haloalkanes (ex.CH3Br) are slightly soluble in water, the rest are insoluble

Naming:
Wize Concept
1. Name the parent hydrocarbon chain
2. Identify the specific halogen involved with a prefix (F=fluoro, Cl=chloro, Br=bromo, I=iodo). Write the prefixes alphabetically along with any other groups present (ex. ethyl)
3. Identify the total numbers of each halogen using prefixes (di, tri, tetra, etc)
4. Indicate the position of the halogen in the chain (try to give the halogen low numbers when possible)

Example: Name the following

1,2-dichloro-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane

Example: Name the following

3-chloro-2-methylprop-1-ene
