Naming and Properties of Alcohols

Properties:
- OH group is polar (can form hydrogen bonds)
- Boiling points are much higher than corresponding alkanes
- Smaller alcohols are a lot more polar, as the alcohols get longer (ex. pentanol), they are less polar
Naming:
Wize Concept
1. Identify the longest carbon chain.
2. The suffix of an alcohol is "ol" (ex. butan-2-ol)
3. If there is more than one OH group, place a prefix (di, tri, tetra) in front of the "ol" ending (ex. butane-1,2-diol)
Example: Name the following molecule

propane-1,2,3-triol
Example: Draw the following molecule
4-ethyloctan-2,5-diol

Name the following molecule:

(openstax)
Name the following molecule
