Naming And Properties of Carboxylic Acids

- These are characterized by a carboxyl group (-COOH)
Properties:
- The presence of both the carbonyl (-C=O) and the hydroxyl (-OH) groups makes the carboxylic acid polar
- They can also form hydrogen bonds with each other and water
- They have higher boiling points than the corresponding hydrocarbons
- smaller carboxylic acids are very soluble in water (1-4C) while chains with 10+ carbons are insoluble in water
