Direct & Partial Variation

There are two types of linear relations -- Direct variation and Partial variation.

Direct Variation

This is when the value of the dependent variable depends directly on the value of the independent variable and nothing else. So, the dependent variable starts at 0.
  • The pair (0,0)(0,0) is found in the table of values
  • The graph starts at the initial point (0,0)(0,0)
  • The equation of the line looks like y=mxy=mx

Partial Variation

This is when the value of the dependent variable depends partly on the value of the independent variable and partly on an initial value that is not 0.
  • The pair (0,0)(0,0) is not found in the table of values
  • The graph starts at the initial point (0,b)(0,b), where bb is the initial value of yy
  • The equation of the line looks like y=mx+by=mx+b
