Conjectures & Hypotheses

A conjecture (plural: conjectures) is an idea, guess or prediction.
  • You can support a conjecture with examples, but you cannot prove a conjecture using examples
  • You can disprove a conjecture by finding a counterexample
Sometimes you'll hear the word "hypothesis" (plural: hypotheses), this is a conjecture that can be tested using an experiment or observation.

For geometric properties, you can use geometric software such as Demos or Geogebra to create examples and counterexamples to support or disprove conjectures.
