Review of Quadratic Equations

What is a Quadratic Equation?

A Quadratic Equation is an equation that can be written in the form y=ax2+bx+cy=ax^2+bx+c where a, b, and c are all real numbers and a, is not zero.

When a quadratic equation is written this way, we say that it is in Standard Form.

Example 1

The following are all quadratic equations. .
  • y=2x23x+1y=2x^2-3x+1
  • y=13x2+7x5y=-\frac{1}{3}x^2+7x-5
  • y=4x216y=4x^2 -16
  • y=x(x6)+2y=x(x-6) + 2, this can be expanded to become y=x26x+2y=x^2 - 6x + 2
  • y=(2x1)(x+2)y=(2x-1)(x+2), this can be expanded to become y=2x2+3x2y=2x^2+3x-2

Graphs of Quadratic Equations

The graph of a quadratic equation has a U shape. This could be facing up or down, but continues infinitely in both directions.
