  • Three irreversible steps:
  • 1. Glucose to glucose 6-phosphate
  • 2. Fructose 1,6-biphosphate
  • 3. Phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) to pyruvate
  • ATP Balance:
  • Two ATP consumed in the first half
  • Two ATP produced in the second half x 2 = 4 ATP
  • NADH, H+ produced x 2 = 2 NADH, H+
  • Three highly regulated enzymes:
  • Hexokinase
  • Phosphofructokinase ("pacemaker enzyme")
  • Pyruvate kinase
  • Occurs in the cytoplasm.
