Aberrations

An aberration in a lens refers to a defect where light is not focused to a point, but is spread out over some region of space.

Chromatic aberration

This occurs because different colors of light are refracted at slightly different angles (they each see a different index of refraction), thus resulting in different focal points for each color.

Spherical aberration

This occurs because spherical shapes don't focus light at a single point: light that passes through the center of the lens is focused farther than light that passes through the edges.
