Gustatory Modality
- Can identify: sweet, sour, salt, bitter and umami
- Possess chemoreceptors
Taste Transduction
- Each taste triggers a different type of receptor:
- Bitter and sweet have G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs)
- Umami uses glutamate GPCRs
- Salt, sour (and bitter again) trigger ion channels
- Ion influx or GPCR cascade --> Ca2+ channels opened --> neurotransmitter release --> cranial nerve activation
- Synaptic pathway: cranial nerve --> medulla --> thalamus --> gustatory cortex

Olfactory Modality
- Odorant binds to GPCR --> cascade triggers opening of ion channel --> signal transduction
- Very closely associated with the limbic system (associated with memory and emotion processing)

Complete the gustatory pathway:
1.
Cranial
nerves --> 2. Synapse on medulla
--> 3. Synapse on thalamus
--> 4. Go to ipsilateral gustatory cortex. Identify the incorrect statement:
