Sensory Adaptation

Sensory adaptation (or habituation) - decreasing response to a stimulus that is constant and unchanging.

Example: If you live near an airport, you will not notice the sound of planes.

Sensory adaptation serves a purpose - it helps us "tune out" things that aren't changing so we can notice things that are.
