The Unconscious Mind
There have been many perspectives on what our unconscious mind contains and how it influences our behaviour.
Freudian perspective
Dynamic unconscious - unconscious is an active system that includes hidden memories, instincts and deep desires, and hidden thoughts.
Repression - mental process that moves unacceptable thoughts and memories from consciousness into unconsciousness.
Freudian slips - speech errors that Freud thought revealed unconscious desires.
Freud's theories about unconsciousness are not supported by scientific research.
Cognitive perspective
Dual process theories - we have two systems, one for fast, automatic, unconscious processing and one for slow, effortful, and conscious processing.
