Encoding, Storage, & Retrieval

Encoding - the process of getting something into memory. Encoding is improved with attention, elaboration, self-relevance, and testing.
Storage - holding something in memory. Different types of memory have different limits on storage.
Retrieval - bringing information out of storage so it can be used.
Types of Memory Storage

Sensory Memory - very brief perceptual store. Storage is thought to be unlimited, but extremely short time (seconds at most). No processing for meaning
Short-term Memory - storage of 7 +/- 2 items for a brief period (20-30 seconds).
Long-term Memory - long-term storage, thought to be unlimited.
